It is a global asset-management empire with more than $1 trillion under management and interests spanning roughly 2,000 businesses across housing, energy, infrastructure, insurance, data centres and other sectors shaped by government policy. Mark Carney joined Brookfield in 2020, served as chair of Brookfield Asset Management from 2022 until January 2025 and led its transition-investing business before leaving to seek the Liberal leadership.
The offshore money trail
Rebel News has followed Brookfield’s money through offshore structures in Bermuda, the Cayman Islands and the Isle of Man. Its investigations reported that two Carney-led green-energy funds totalling $25 billion were based in Bermuda at an address shared with a bicycle-rental shop, and that a Brookfield Isle of Man entity listed a private apartment as its headquarters. Parliamentary witnesses and opposition MPs have accused Brookfield of creating a multibillion-dollar Canadian tax gap. Carney has defended Brookfield’s offshore funds as lawful structures designed to maximize returns, and the government says he has followed the applicable rules. Brookfield Watch believes Canadians still deserve full answers about who benefited and what taxes were paid.

Rebel News has also reported on Commons ethics-committee testimony concerning more than $3 billion in Brookfield real-estate and energy investments linked to China, its business relationship with Hong Kong billionaire Vincent Lo — whom witnesses connected to Beijing’s United Front networks — financing from the Bank of China, and Carney’s meetings with Xi Jinping and other senior Chinese Communist Party officials. Those connections are not proof of criminal wrongdoing, but they raise serious questions about national security, conflicts of interest and whose interests were being advanced.

Those questions did not disappear when Carney became prime minister. His conflict screen covered more than 100 Brookfield-related entities, while Brookfield told Parliament that its funds owned more than 2,000 businesses. In Brookfield Watch’s view, that gap makes independent scrutiny essential whenever federal decisions touch housing, energy, artificial intelligence, infrastructure or other sectors in which Brookfield may profit.

The Liberals won Beaches–East York, North Vancouver–Capilano and Chicoutimi–Le Fjord, flipping the Quebec seat from the Conservatives and raising their House of Commons total to 173. Carney now has the majority he wanted and can pass legislation or survive confidence votes without relying on the opposition.
A snap fall election may be unnecessary, but it cannot be dismissed. If Carney decides to turn a temporary polling advantage and confrontation with Donald Trump into another mandate before Canadians refocus on recession, deficits, housing costs and the government’s domestic record, Brookfield Watch intends to be ready.
Steven Guilbeault’s resignation has also exposed the break between Carney’s political repositioning and the Trudeau-era environmental agenda. The Liberals may be changing their sales pitch, but the questions surrounding Carney, Brookfield and Beijing have not changed.
